SCHOLARSHIPS FOR CHILDREN OF VIETNAM VETERANS Vietnam veteran families have benefited from $468,000 in tertiary education scholarships presented to 52 sons and daughters of Vietnam veterans in 2008, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Alan Griffin, said today. Mr Griffin said the scholarships are recognition by the Australian Government of the additional challenges children may face due to their parents’ Vietnam War service.

The battle for Lone Pine on 6-9 August 1915 was one of the bloodiest of the Gallipoli campaign. Australia suffered over 2000 casualties and the Turkish around three times as many. Such was the intensity of the fighting that seven Victoria Crosses were awarded for action at Lone Pine.

The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Alan Griffin, will present a cheque for more than $94,000 to the Naval Association of Australia at its Triennial Conference in Hobart today. The association is one of 480 ex service organisations that received $6.66 million as part of the boost to the Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) program.
