WINNERS OF 90th ANNIVERSARY ART PRIZE ANNOUNCED

The daughter of a Vietnam Veteran, a Second World War veteran, an ex-Army member whose

family has served since before the First World War and a DVA staff member are winners in the

Lou White Art Prize, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Alan Griffin said today.

Presented by Ms Thérèse Rein, Minister Griffin said the Lou White Art Prize was one of several

events organised by DVA staff to mark the 90th anniversary of the Repatriation Commission and

raise money for the Kokoda Track Foundation.

“The winner of the Lou White Art Prize is Ms Dianne Hoath of NSW, daughter of a Vietnam

veteran.  Dianne received $1000 for her work titled ‘Self Portrait, Daily Mask’,” Mr Griffin said.

Second prize was awarded to Department of Veterans’ Affairs staff member Elizabeth Gippel,

also of NSW, who received $500 for her acrylic on canvas piece titled ‘Remembrance’.

Third prize of $250 was awarded to ex-Army member Leonie Armbruster of Tasmania for her oil

painting titled ‘Father and Son’.  Leonie is active in Legacy and her local RSL sub-branch.

The People’s Choice Award went to Second World War veteran Mr Walter Hourn of

Queensland for his oil painting ‘Edna’.  Walter receives a 12 month membership to his nearest

art gallery.

Ms Rein presented prizes to the winners, congratulating them on their works and for supporting

the Kokoda Track Foundation.

Mr Griffin said the Prize was named after the late Lou White, a trained artist who served in the

RAAF in the Second World War.  Lou believed in the significant contribution of art to the

physical, mental and social wellbeing of veterans.

“I congratulate all entrants on their work.  Their entry fees have helped to raise funds for

education, health and sporting initiatives for people of the Kokoda Track,” Mr Griffin said.

“Repatriation Commission 90th anniversary events this year have raised $28,000 for the Kokoda

Track Foundation, including almost $2000 from the Lou White Art Prize.”
