Fourteenth man charged with people smuggling
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) have charged another three Indonesian
nationals with people smuggling, bringing the total number of people charged
with these offences to 14 since September 2008.
The three men aged 19, 27 and 29 will face Perth Magistrates Court today.
Police will allege in court that the men attempted to facilitate the arrival of 33
people to Australia from Indonesia on 16 December 2008.
The vessel was intercepted by the Royal Australian Navy patrol boat HMAS
Maryborough, operating under the control of Border Protection Command off
the West Australian coast.
The three men were charged by the AFP yesterday with one count of
facilitating the bringing of non-citizens into Australia (of five or more people),
contrary to Section 232A of the Migration Act 1958.
The maximum penalty for this offence is 20 years imprisonment.
