Tax Institute says Henry Report release must stand alone
The country's leading professional association in tax, the Taxation Institute of Australia, is urging
Treasurer Wayne Swan to release the Henry Report separately to the Federal Budget.
The Institute welcomes the Treasurers confirmation that the Henry review and a government response
will be released by the time of the Budget, but is concerned that in a weekend interview the Treasurer
failed to rule out this coinciding with the Budget itself.
The Henry Report stands to be the most important milestone in recent tax reform history and how the
Government deals with its recommendations will have an impact on the lives of every Australian, Tax
Institute president David Williams said.
The Taxation Institute calls on the Government to release the Henry review and a government
response separately to the Budget, to properly enable a thoughtful and mature public discussion about
tax reform.
Releasing on Budget night what is the next step in a once-in-a-generation opportunity for tax reform,
would not give it the recognition it deserves.
