Expert comment on police weapons —

There are calls for Victorian Police to replace the standard revolvers used by

officers with new semi-automatic pistols, following the fatal shooting in South

Melbourne.

Is there evidence to back up claims that revolvers are inadequate for police use?

What are the problems associated with semi-automatic pistols? Are they suited to

Victoria’s law enforcement needs?

With police in five states and territories already using Glock semi-automatic pistols,

what is the political background behind Victoria’s reluctance to re-arm its force?

RMIT University’s Associate Professor Julian Bondy is an expert in justice and

policing issues.

Associate Professor Bondy has published extensively in the field of criminal justice,

including research on the use of volunteers to support policing, bladed weapons

and violence in our community and evaluations of strategies to reduce re-

offending.
