Government Takes Multicultural Agenda Forward

Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration and Citizenship Senator Kate Lundy reaffirmed the government's commitment to a multicultural Australia following her first meeting today with the Australian Multicultural Advisory Council (AMAC).

"The government is committed to multiculturalism in Australia and I am excited about taking that agenda forward," Senator Lundy said. "I am keen to draw on the advice and diverse experience of the council's current 16 members, as well as their collective wisdom.

"I have met with AMAC chair Andrew Demetriou today and conveyed to him my enthusiasm for my new responsibilities and the part the council has to play.

"AMAC is well-placed to inform how best to shape policies and programs that build upon Australia's diverse and inclusive nature."

The council was established in December 2008 as a source of independent advice to government and was re-appointed in June 2010 for a further term of two years until 30 June 2012. Today's meeting in Melbourne marked the fourth time AMAC has met this year.

"I have been impressed with the contributions of the council to date, including their statement providing advice and recommendations on a multicultural policy, The People of Australia," Senator Lundy said.

"One of my first priorities will be to develop the government's response to the statement and its recommendations.

"The government is also looking forward to the council's thoughts on how best to support migrant settlement in rural and regional areas, as well as the formation of policy to better strengthen local communities.

"Together with the council, we can build on Australia's diverse and inclusive nature with practical and sustainable solutions, including multicultural policies which the nation can be proud of," the parliamentary secretary added.
