Sir Roger Douglas at Liberal Democrats National Conference
Liberal Democratic Party press release
5 January 2010
Sir Roger Douglas, New Zealands former Minister for Finance, is to be the guest speaker at
the Liberal Democratic Partys National Conference on 24 January.
Sir Roger is best-known for his prominent role in the radical economic restructuring of New
Zealand's economy undertaken by the Labour Government during the 1980s. Those policies
became known as "Rogernomics".
In 1993 Sir Roger founded the Association of Consumers and Taxpayers (the forerunner of
the ACT New Zealand Party) and in 2008 was returned to Parliament as an ACT Party
backbencher.
Since 2008 ACT has been part of the NZ government, in coalition with the National Party.
National President of the LDP, Mr. Peter Whelan, explained that, The New Zealand ACT
Party supports the principles of small government and low taxes, similar to the Liberal
Democratic Party (LDP). We are delighted that Sir Roger has been able to find time in his
busy schedule to be present at our annual conference.
Australia had the Hawke/Keating government and the UK had Margaret Thatcher, but New
Zealands economic liberalisation was arguably more profound and generated even greater
long term benefits for the country.
The LDP National Conference is at Balmain Leagues Club, Rozelle on Sunday 24th January,
2010, commencing at 2pm.
The conference is open to the media.
