Premier's Leadership Lauded by Property Council

Date: 19 November 2009

Media release

The Property Council today has welcomed the strong leadership role taken by the Premier on the issue of population growth facing South East Queensland.

In her speech at a well-attended Property Council luncheon, the Premier said that she was strongly opposed to a population cap for South East Queensland, linking such an ill-advised policy to massive job losses and soaring housing prices.

The Premier was strong in her conviction when she stated that "This Government is not about to get into the business of introducing a "Checkpoint Charlie" at the Tweed River, telling people where they can or cannot live".

Property Council Queensland Executive Director, Steve Greenwood, said "This is a very significant and major policy announcement by the State Government, and the Property Council very much welcomes the Premier's leadership on the issue of population growth management.

"We further welcome the call for a South East Queensland Growth Summit to be held early next year, which will bring together experts in planning, development, infrastructure and sustainability with the community to discuss growth, liveability and sustainability.

"The very important discussion following the Premier's announcement should not be a lengthy discussion.

"We would hope that the Premier's discussion with the community will not take any longer than 6 months and following this, decisive and significant action will be taken.

"We look forward to working with the Queensland Government to address these issues, and would welcome an open and immediate dialogue with the property industry to get the ball rolling and create good community outcomes.
