For Immediate Release
Open Windows becoming a threat to every household with children
Sydney, NSW 27th
October, 2009 - Following the recent tragedies with 2 children falling from open
windows in the past week it is time for the Government to take responsibility to keep our community
safe.
Ron Delezio, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Day of Difference Foundation has said, the
Government grants applications at Councils and Land and Environment Courts level to support for the
future development of a safe community that they are elected to care for. Its not good enough that
they allow people to have injuries because building codes are not as good as they should be. An awning
that collapsed on a pedestrian in Manly started a major overhaul in awnings safety around the Manly
community to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Failure to maintain correct safety standards is not just causing a great expense to the community; it is
also causing pain and suffering to families. Councils and Governments need to take control so that
innocent people don't suffer as so many young children and adults have.
A simple lock installed or a short term method of a cheap length of wooden dowel can be the difference
between a happy end to the day or a stay in an Intensive Care Unit where life and death could hang in
the balance.
When education fails to change these terrible outcomes, it is up to Governments to step in and make
laws to protect the innocent young children. The change in laws controlling areas such as swimming
pools and making sure all swimming pools are secured correctly need to be broadened to window safety
in all homes. Consultation between Government and the Community need to start now so that changes
happen fast before it is too late.
Just last week one child died and another is still recovering in hospital in a serious condition from falling
out of windows. These accidents are completely preventable and we need to ensure that all measures
are taken to stop this from happening again.
