NEW DEPUTY HEAD OF DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS’ AFFAIRS

APPOINTED

A former Army officer with extensive public service experience has been appointed Deputy

President of the Repatriation Commission, a position which is the deputy to the head of the

Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Alan Griffin announced today that Mr Shane Carmody, formerly

Deputy Chief Executive Officer in the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, has been appointed to a

five-year term as Deputy President of the Repatriation Commission.

Mr Carmody is a career public servant, having held senior positions in the civil aviation, defence

and finance portfolios.  He has a strong background in Defence with credentials in policy

development and implementation as well as financial and program management.

“I am sure Mr Carmody’s skills and attributes, together with his background in the Army and as

a senior executive in Defence, make him well placed to provide assistance to the veteran and

defence force communities,” Mr Griffin said.

“Mr Carmody comes at an important time for the Commission and my Department, and with his

knowledge and experience he will play a central role in bedding down the organisational

changes that began several years ago.  I look forward to working with Mr Carmody to support

those who have served in defence of our nation,” he said.

The Repatriation Commission is responsible under the Veterans’ Entitlements Act 1986 for

providing health and compensation benefits to eligible veterans.

Mr Carmody also serves as a member of the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation

Commission, which is responsible for providing rehabilitation, compensation and other benefits

to current and former members of the ADF in service after 30 June 2004.
