MINISTER TO ATTEND MERCHANT MARINERS CEREMONY
ON CENTRAL COAST
Minister for Veterans Affairs Alan Griffin will TOMORROW attend the annual Merchant
Mariners Memorial Service at the Norah Head Light House, on the NSW Central Coast.
Joined by Craig Thomson MP, Member for Dobell, Minister Griffin said merchant mariners
played a vital part in Australias war efforts in both world wars but their story was largely untold.
Merchant seamen played an important role in Australias war efforts and in supporting military
operations, Mr Griffin said.
Mr Thomson said the Central Coast had special significance in the wartime history of Australia.
Many Merchant ships came under attack near Norah Head in the Second World War and
merchant mariners lost their lives keeping open the vital trade route along the Australian coast,
Mr Thomson said.
