MEDIA RELEASE
Minister's passion will keep child safety in the spotlight
The Association of Children's Welfare Agencies (ACWA) has welcomed
Premier Kristina Keneally's decision to retain Linda Burney as NSW
Community Services Minister.
ACWA CEO Andrew McCallum said Ms Burney, who was appointed to the
Community Services Portfolio in September last year, has been a passionate
driver of change within the State's child protection system and is delighted
she will continue to play a leading role in the implementation of the
Government's Keep Them Safe action plan.
"Ms Burney's commitment, skills and leadership has ensured the ongoing
momentum of this crucial reform process," Mr McCallum said.
"She is a strong supporter of the integral role the non-Government sector
plays in child protection and we look forward to working closely with her, now
and into the future, to achieve systemic change that will deliver effective
outcomes for children and families in need."
Mr McCallum has also welcomed Ms Burney's new appointment as Minister
responsible for the State Plan, which gives her a seat on the Cabinet's budget
committee.
"Through this combined role, I am confident Ms Burney will ensure that child
protection reform remains high on the NSW Government's agenda," Mr
McCallum said.
The Association of Children's Welfare Agencies is the New South Wales peak
body representing non-government organisations providing services to
vulnerable children, young people and their families. The organisation has
been operating for more than 50 years and is supported by over 100 member
agencies.
