Launch of the State of the Regions Report

The latest snapshot of the state of the nation


The Australian Local Government Association’s State of the Regions 2008-09 report will be released today

at the Local Government Constitutional Summit (8-11 December) in Melbourne.


The latest State of the Regions report from leading forecasting group, National Economics, for the Australian

Local Government Association presents a sobering snapshot of the nation. 

The State of the Regions Report for 2008-09 sets out:

The costs of climate change and greenhouse gas emissions abatement;

The global financial crisis;

The unsustainable level of national debt;

How broadband must be boosted to make Australia internationally competitive; and

The failure of the knowledge economy to spread outside of the existing knowledge-intensive regions.


The President of ALGA, Cr Geoff Lake, and Drs Peter Brain and Ian Manning from National Economics will

be available for interviews at the launch.

followed by an impressive line-up of speakers until Thursday including: Geoff Gallop, Local Government
