MINISTER TO ATTEND CEREMONY AT
ATATURK MEMORIAL
The Minister for Veterans Affairs, Alan Griffin, will TOMORROW attend a ceremony at the
Ataturk Memorial on Anzac Parade recognising Australias strong relationship with Turkey.
Minister Griffin will be joined by His Excellency Mr Murat Ersavci, Ambassador of the Republic
of Turkey, who will unveil a new plaque during the small ceremony.
Mr Griffin said the memorial honours Turkish and ANZAC forces who served in the Gallipoli
campaign and the great Turkish soldier and leader, Kemal Ataturk.
Since our two countries fought each other on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915, Australia and
Turkey have forged a great friendship, he said.
Today we are both committed to honouring our shared wartime history, particularly in
commemorations such as Anzac Day services on the Gallipoli Peninsula.
The plaque being unveiled today by Ambassador Ersavci pays tribute to the ANZAC and
Turkish troops and explains the enhancements made to the memorial in 2007.
Minister Griffin will be available for interview and photos following the service.
