LOCAL MUSEUMS LONE PINE DEDICATED BY MINISTER ON
93rd ANNIVERSARY OF BATTLE
On the 93rd anniversary of the Battle of Lone Pine, the Lone Pine tree at the Light Horse and
Field Artillery Museum in Victoria will be dedicated by the Minister for Veterans Affairs, Alan
Griffin, tomorrow.
The battle for Lone Pine on 6-9 August 1915 was one of the bloodiest of the Gallipoli campaign.
Australia suffered over 2000 casualties and the Turkish around three times as many. Such was
the intensity of the fighting that seven Victoria Crosses were awarded for action at Lone Pine.
Pine cones souvenired from the site by two soldiers were brought home after the war and grown
from these seedlings. The Lone Pine planted at the Light Horse Museum is descended from
these seedlings.
