SENATE COMMITTEE REPORT ON HOUSING AFFORDABILITY - MORE BAD NEWS FOR REGIONAL PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS
"Yet again we see another report that has identified specific issues of housing affordability in regional areas, and in particular 'a housing affordability crisis' in the Pilbara Region of WA," said Toni Walkington, commenting on the recently released Senate Committee Report on Housing Affordability in Australia. http://tinyurl.com/5j6j9z
The committee has received a vast amount of evidence highlighting the dire circumstances faced by Karratha, and the Pilbara region in general, as a result of the housing affordability crisis.
Evidence was consistently provided that unless you work in the mining industry or for one of the few employers providing subsidised accommodation, you simply cannot afford to live in a town such as Karratha
"If you are a public servant here and you do not get your house as part of your package then you are not going to live here for longer than 10 minutes before you realise that you are going to go broke. I do not know how many public servants could pay $1,500 a week for a house--probably none."
- State MP, Mr Fred Riebeling, from the report (p129)
