THE HON MARK BUTLER MP
Minister for Mental Health and Ageing
MEDIA RELEASE
19 October 2010
HEARTS, MINDS AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN NEW CENTRES OF
RESEARCH EXCELLENCE
Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler today announced 11 further
Centres of Research Excellence, following on from initial announcements in July and
August 2010.
The Centres of Research Excellence scheme, funded through the National Health
and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), provides support for teams of researchers
to pursue collaborative research.
The Centres will receive $27 million over 5 years.
Medical research and ensuring that this research is incorporated into health care is
one of the keys to improving the health of all Australians Mr Butler said.
These new centres will use funding of up to $2.5 million to bring together prominent
researchers in a variety of fields to tackle a range of health issues, including
cardiology, neuroscience and nursing care.
Hospital care can cause inadvertent problems for the whole body, when patients
develop complications related to poor pain and anxiety management, as well as skin
problems.
One of the centres, the University of Queenslands Centre of Research Excellence
in Nursing Interventions for Hospitalised Patients, will trial different treatments, and
examine existing research, to find the best ways to prevent these problems arising in
Australias ageing hospital population.
Eleven Centres of Research Excellence will benefit from the funding, with research
in each area to begin immediately.
A list of the NHMRC Centres of Research Excellence is attached.
