Healthier veterans in 2009
Dear Editor
I would like to thank the veteran community for their support in my first year as
Minister for Veterans Affairs.
I hope all Australians, and particularly our veterans, war widows and service
personnel, have a happy and healthy Christmas.
One of my priorities for next year is continuing to improve the health and well-
being of veterans and their families.
If veterans are thinking about a health and lifestyle focused New Years
resolution, there are a number of programs available that may be able to help.
For example, Cooking for One or Two teaches veterans to cook healthy, easy
meals in small portions, Heart Health is a year long program combining a
fitness plan with educational seminars to make a healthy lifestyle a new habit
and Mens Sheds get groups of veterans together on a regular basis to meet
with their mates and enjoy social activities.
These particular programs are available right across Australia, so to get
involved visit www.dva.gov.au, call 133 254 or visit your local Veterans Affairs
Network office.
Alternatively, if veterans would like to start their own group, Veterans and
Community Grants are available to eligible applicants.
There are many more programs on offer which could lead to a healthier,
happier life in 2009I encourage all in the veteran community to take a step
towards a healthier lifestyle and longer life.
Yours Sincerely
Alan Griffin
Minister for Veterans Affairs
