Community Housing Lobby Seeks $600 million from Richard Wynne

Yesterday the Community Housing Federation of Victoria (CHFV) met with the

State Housing Minister Richard Wynne.  At this meeting CHFV presented a case

for a dedicated fund of $600 million to build affordable rental housing.

A real boost to investment in the 2009 budget to tackle the supply crisis in

affordable housing would improve access for tenants in urgent need. CHFV

calls for next year’s budget to target building at least 2,000 more community

managed rental houses.

Brian Pound the Executive Officer for CHFV, the peak body for the community

housing agencies that provide low income rental accommodation says, “The

Brumby Government has the opportunity to invest some of the surplus to

make a real difference to housing people in need”. Pound says, “Community

housing is ready, willing and able to use State funding to leverage increased

capital to build more affordable housing”.

A new injection of government funding would kick start growth.  The need is

urgent and real action is vital for the well being of Victoria.
