Community Housing Lobby Seeks a Thousand Extra Houses from the
Brumby Government
Today the Community Housing Federation of Victoria (CHFV) met with the
State Housing Minister Richard Wynne. At this meeting the Federation
presented a case for a dedicated fund of $380 million over three years to build
one thousand additional affordable rental houses.
A real boost to investment in the 2010 Victorian budget is needed to tackle the
persistent supply crisis in affordable housing. State action would help house
people in urgent need after the Commonwealth stimulus funding starts to dry
up. CHFV calls for next years budget to target the construction of community
managed rental houses and continue the kick start to the economy from the
Rudd stimulus.
Brian Pound the Executive Officer for CHFV, the peak body for organisations
that provide affordable rental accommodation says, The Brumby Government
has the opportunity to invest in the future and fortify growth in the economy.
Pound says, Community housing is ready, willing and able to build more
affordable housing for a fairer Victoria.
The need is urgent and ongoing with the National Housing Supply Council
projecting current demand will increase to 717,000 in Victoria by 2028.
Decisive action is vital to supply affordable housing for those that cannot meet
the costs of entering a stressed property market.
