Brain Research a priority in Federal Budget

Florey Neuroscience Institutes (FNI) has received $39 million in infrastructure spending in tonight’s

Federal Budget.  The money will go towards the immediate construction of two dedicated

neuroscience research facilities in Melbourne valued at $225 million.

The contribution of $39 million is in addition to $37 million the government committed in 2006, and will

secure 300 construction jobs over two years.

Professor Geoffrey Donnan, Director of FNI, said, “We are delighted with the Federal Government’s

continued commitment to brain research, particularly during these difficult economic times”.

“The Federal Government clearly understands that Australia is at the cutting edge of research into

stroke, epilepsy, depression, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s dementia and Huntington’s disease

and many other diseases that affect the brain and mind”

“This funding commitment will help us build the fourth largest brain research group in the world”,

Professor Donnan said.

The research facilities will be built in Parkville and Heidelberg. They have been designed to foster

collaboration between research teams to yield results more quickly.
