Boost for Tasmanian volunteer organisations ahead of

International Volunteer Day

More than 180 organisations across Tasmania will benefit from nearly $600,000 in

Australian Government funding for volunteer grants.

Across Australia the Government is providing $21 million in volunteer grants to more

than 6,700 community and volunteer organisations.

In Tasmania the Volunteer Grants Program 2009 will support over 7,100 volunteers

and will cover the cost of new equipment and fuel.

Grants of between $1,000 and $5,000 are provided to non-profit organisations to help

them purchase items such as computers, printers, cameras, fridges, marquees and

shade sails.

This is a great boost to volunteers and volunteer organisations across Tasmania

ahead of International Volunteer Day on 5 December.

Every day volunteers are out in their local communities working tirelessly to help the

elderly, the sick and those who have hit hard times.

The Australian Government values the hard work of Tasmanian volunteers, who give

their valuable time, expertise and understanding to the most vulnerable and

disadvantaged people in our community.

Tasmanian organisations to receive funding include the Scout Association, surf life

saving organisations in Tasmania and the Tasmanian fire services.

Eight branches of the Scout Association in Tasmania will receive over $26,000 from

the Volunteer Grants Program to purchase equipment and fuel to support 132

volunteers.

The Surf Life Saving Tasmania Club will receive over $25,000 to help 520 of its

community volunteers across six surf life saving clubs in Tasmania.

More than 20 Tasmanian Fire Service branches across Tasmania will share in nearly

$70,000 to assist 507 volunteer fire-fighters over this and future fire seasons.
