CFA attends chemical spill in Craigieburn
Note Printing Australia in Craigieburn experienced a chemical leak on Saturday 02 January
2010.
Approximately 27,000 litres of the chemical Erthyl Methyl Ketone was spilt.
This morning CFA crews were alerted at 09:55 when workers complained of remaining
residual fumes in the worksite. Approximately 200 workers were evacuated this morning as
crews began to search for evidence of the chemical.
Erthyl Methyl Ketone is heavier than air, and as such CFA and MFB crews, as well as a
Scientific Officer and on-site engineer have been on site for most of the day attempting to
detect and purge the chemical in the factorys drains, pits and service ducts.
Detection equipment is currently being used to detect toxicity and flammability levels within
the factory.
There have been no injuries reported. The incident is under control and is of no immediate
threat to communities.
