WELCOMING THE FUTURE LEADERS OF THE RAAF

The Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP

today congratulated 40 students at RAAF East Sale, who have completed the Initial

Officer Course (IOC).

Minister Snowdon reviewed the graduation parade and wished the students well for

their future specialist training and postings to operational units.

“This is a proud moment in these Officers’ careers,” said Mr Snowdon.

“RAAF Base East Sale has developed as a centre of Air Force learning excellence.

The $60 million Officers’ Training School and support facilities which opened earlier

this year are world class venues in which to train the next generation of Air Force

leaders.”

In addition Minister Snowdon also met with several former Gap Year cadets who

have been offered permanent positions and started Air Traffic Control and Air

Combat Officer specialist training courses

A total of 20 RAAF Gap Year Cadets have successfully applied for permanent Air

Force positions as the 2008 Air Force Gap Year program draws to an end.

“The Air Force Gap Year program has given participants a comprehensive

understanding of RAAF and the success of the program is a credit to the RAAF staff

who have worked hard to support Gap Year,” Mr Snowdon said.

“The 20 Gap Year cadets, 9 women and 11 men, will enter the permanent Air Force

through a number of avenues. Some will attend Australian Defence Force Academy

next year, or enter through the Undergraduate program, studying courses such as

dentistry and nursing.

“Additionally, up to 10 other Gap Year cadets have indicated interest in positions with

the Air Force Reserve.

“And without doubt every single one of them has spent an incredible year with the

RAAF, and leaves with a strong appreciation for the role served by Australia’s airmen

and women in our nation’s defence.”

Gap Year offers young Australians, between 17 and 24, the opportunity to

experience military training and lifestyle for up to 12 months.
