STATEMENT ON CHANDLER MACLEOD AND DEFENCE

FORCE RECRUITING CONTRACT

Greg Combet, Minister for Defence Personnel, Materiel and Science, noted today’s

ASX announcement by Chandler MacLeod Group that it intends to terminate its

recruiting services contract with Defence.

“Chandler Macleod Group (CMG) has announced it will seek, for commercial

reasons, to terminate its contract with Defence for the provision of Australian

Defence Force (ADF) recruiting services,” said Mr Combet.

“Defence will, subject to a number of conditions being satisfied, agree to the

termination of its contract with CMG.  Such conditions are, among other things, to

ensure the continuity of ADF recruiting services.”

“I can assure all current applicants for enlistment and appointment that their

applications will continue to be processed and that this current situation will not affect

them joining the Navy, Army or Air Force.”

“Any potential applicants can continue to apply during this period. Defence is not

turning anyone away from joining up whilst this transition takes place.”

“Defence will be in contact with all staff today about the announcement. Work will

continue as usual for all Defence Force Recruiting Staff during this period.”

The terms of the exit agreement remain commercial-in-confidence.

“Defence has a robust plan in place to continue recruitment services and will now

work with CMG to maintain ADF recruiting operations until other arrangements are

finalised.”

“CMG will carry on until a new arrangement is in place – the aim being to conclude

this by early 2010.”

“I note the statement from CMG in their announcement that they ‘are committed to

working with DOD on a smooth transition process to ensure there is no impact on the

achievement of recruitment targets’.”

CMG was awarded the recruiting services contract in July 2008 following an

extensive and competitive open tender process conducted in accordance with the

Commonwealth Procurement Guidelines.
