WHO: Mr James Bunce, PhD student at the Strategic & Defence Studies Centre (SDSC), Australian National University, will be presented with his 2009 Leo Francis Mahony Memorial Scholarship by Deputy President of the United Services Institute (USI)of the ACT, Mr John McFarlane, in the presence of ANU Chancellor, Professor Kim Beazley and the Head of SDSC, Professor Hugh White. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Mr Bunce is the 5th recipient of the USI of ACT’s annual scholarship program, started in 2004, awarded to PhD candidates undertaking relevant national security and defence studies. This award ceremony will precede a public lecture by Dr Mark Thomson, Director, Budget and Management Program, Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), on “Promises and Secrets: Defence Funding and the 2009 White Paper”. Media are also welcome to attend this presentation. It will conclude at around 6.15 pm. The USI of the ACT is a non-profit defence-affiliated association managed by volunteers. It supports the Department of Defence by promoting informed debate on, and improving public awareness and understanding of, national security and defence. It achieves these aims primarily by hosting regular presentations in Canberra by prominent and learned speakers on national security and defence and posting the content of these presentations on the RUSI website at www.rusiaust.org as permanent references.
