SAIL TRAINING SHIP YOUNG ENDEAVOUR ARRIVES IN DARWIN

The Administrator of the Northern Territory, His Honour Mr Tom Pauling AO QC, welcomed sail

training ship Young Endeavour to Darwin this week, marking the ship’s first visit to the Northern

Territory in eight years.

Lieutenant Commander Gavin Dawe, Commanding Officer Young Endeavour, and Mr Achim

Drescher, Chairman of the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme Board, welcomed His Honour on

board the ship during a reception on Wednesday 26 August 2009.

Lieutenant Commander Dawe said, “Young Endeavour is currently undertaking a

circumnavigation of Australia, celebrating twenty one years of life-changing voyages for young

Australians.

During the six month circumnavigation we will embark more than 700 young men and women to

participate in our unique development program – including many from north and west Australia

who will sail in Young Endeavour while the ship is in their coastal waters.

It is a pleasure to be back in Darwin and to have the opportunity to invite so many members of the

community to visit the ship. We hope to see many more young Territorians sail in Young

Endeavour over the next twenty one years”.

The Hon Kate Ellis MP, Minister for Youth; Mr Damian Hale MP, Member for Solomon, The

Hon Jane Aagaard MLA, Speaker of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly; and Mr Peter

Styles MLA, Shadow Minister for Young Territorians, also joined corporate and community

leaders to celebrate the ship’s arrival in Darwin.

Since setting sail in May Young Endeavour has visited Brisbane, Bundaberg, Mackay, Airlie

Beach, Townsville, Cairns and Darwin. The ship will visit Exmouth, Fremantle, Esperance,

Adelaide and Williamstown before returning to Sydney in December.

Since 1988 the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme, in partnership with the Royal Australian Navy,

has provided challenging training voyages for over 11,000 young Australians in Young

Endeavour. These voyages provide a unique, challenging and inspirational experience that

increases self awareness, develops teamwork and leadership skills and creates a strong sense of

community responsibility.
