Royal Australian Air Force jet flypast
60th Anniversary of the Korean War
What:
Royal Australian Air Force aircraft will conduct a flypast over Canberra
as part of the national commemoration of the 60th
anniversary of the
commencement of the Korean War.
Where:
Three F/A-18 Hornets, from Number 2 Operational Conversion Unit at
RAAF Base Williamtown, will approach from the south east and
perform a close formation flypast over the Korean War Memorial on
ANZAC Parade.
The jets will travel at speeds of approximately 350 - 450 knots (650 -
830kph) and maintain an altitude not below 1000 feet (300m).

Approximately 11:50am, Saturday 23 October 2010
Media Note:
RAAF flypasts are conducted within strict limitations. Safety, noise reduction
and the environment are vital considerations in planning for and the conduct of
flypast activities.

activity.
Background:
Minister for Veterans Affairs, Defence Science and Personnel and Indigenous
Affairs, the Honourable Warren Snowdon, MP recently honoured the
contribution
made by a courageous group of Air Force personnel who formed the first
Commonwealth unit to conduct combat missions in the Korean War 60 years ago.
Throughout the war, more than 17,000 Australian service personnel served with
honour and distinction including No 77 Squadron and the Royal Australian Regiment,

both of which were stationed in Japan at the time,
as part of the British
Commonwealth Occupation Force.
No. 77 Squadron conducted more than 4,800 missions supporting the United Nations
ground forces and targeting North Korean military installations and supply lines, such
as railways and roads. The squadron was honoured by the South Korean President for
exceptional meritorious service and heroism.
Three hundred and thirty-nine Australian men
and women died in the Korean War,
more than 1200 were wounded and 29 suffered the ordeal of being a prisoner of war.
