PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE TO CONSIDER NEW

FACILITIES AT RAAF EDINBURGH

The Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support, the Hon. Dr Mike Kelly AM

MP, and the Member for Wakefield, Mr Nick Champion MP, announced today

that a $99.56 million construction proposal for the redevelopment of facilities

and infrastructure at RAAF Base Edinburgh, South Australia, has been

referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works.

“The project will upgrade the base’s existing facilities and infrastructure to

support several Air Force squadrons,” Dr Kelly said.

The RAAF Edinburgh Redevelopment project will provide new facilities for No

87 Squadron and No 462 Squadron, new and refurbished facilities for No 24

Squadron and No 92 Wing, construction of a new air traffic control tower, new

ordnance loading aprons, enhanced security to the base, an upgrade to

engineering services and the demolition of redundant buildings, including

some containing asbestos.

“A project of this scale will provide a significant boost to the local economy by

utilising local tradespeople, labourers and building materials suppliers,” Mr

Champion said.

Subject to Parliamentary approval, construction is planned to commence in

late 2009 and be completed in mid-2012.
