Personal details of soldiers killed in Afghanistan

Sapper Jacob Moerland and Sapper Darren Smith from the Brisbane-based 2nd

Combat Engineer Regiment (2 CER) died as a result of wounds sustained when an

improvised explosive device detonated yesterday morning, Afghanistan time.

They were part of an Australian dismounted patrol conducting operations in the

Mirabad Valley region of Uruzgan province.

Both soldiers were serving with the 1st Mentoring Task Force in Afghanistan.

Sapper Smith’s Explosive Detection Dog Herbie was also killed.

There were no other Australian or Afghan casualties.

Both Sapper Moerland and Sapper Smith leave behind loving families, who are

receiving support from 2 CER and from the Defence Community Organisation.

The families of both soldiers have requested their privacy to be respected during this
