PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY FOR DEFENCE SUPPORT
ADDRESSES NATIONAL SECURITY SEMINAR
Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support, the Hon Dr Mike Kelly AM MP,
today addressed members of the Royal United Services Institute of
Queensland at their 2009 National Security Seminar in Brisbane.
With its broad membership of serving and retired members of the Australian
Defence Force, the Royal United Services Institute provides an important
avenue for discussion and debate on national security issues, Dr Kelly said.
The theme of the 2009 Seminar, Civil-Military Relations, was an opportunity to
discuss the specific challenges facing Australia, the United Nations and other
members of the international community in ensuring well planned and
coordinated support for overseas missions.
Strengthening the interaction between civilian agencies, police and military
forces is critical to meet the needs of those affected by conflict and insecurity
in many parts of the world, Dr Kelly said.
I welcome the Seminars focus on this key policy issue which is a core
element of the Australian Governments National Security Framework.
Our security, diplomacy and development agencies collectively have a role in
promoting peace and stability overseas.
The Australian Government is committed to the development of civil-military
capabilities to enhance national security, including through the work of the
Asia Pacific Civil-Military Centre of Excellence.
