NORTHERN TERRITORY AFL TEAM TO STAR AT MCG

The Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon. Warren Snowdon

MP, today congratulated the Santa Teresa AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT)

team on winning the right to play the curtain-raiser for the Richmond versus

Essendon game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Santa Teresa won the pre-season competition – the Defence Jobs Cup.

An initiative of Defence Force Recruiting and AFLNT, the Cup was contested

in Darwin by teams from across the Northern Territory.

“The Santa Teresa team were up against some strong opposition, but took out

the inaugural Defence Jobs Cup and will now play against a VFL side on AFL

holy ground – the MCG,” Mr Snowdon said.

“They demonstrate what teamwork can achieve and this is what the ADF is all

about.

“The young, fit, healthy men from Santa Teresa are great role models, not

only for their own community but for all Australians.

“They should feel incredibly proud of the work they have done to get here

today,” Mr Snowdon said.

“With many of the team members currently serving in NORFORCE, they

exemplify the Army values of courage, initiative and teamwork in action.

“The partnership between Defence and AFL Northern Territory is a prime

example of what can be achieved by working together to improve Indigenous

lives and livelihoods.

“I am greatly looking forward to meeting the players and seeing them in

action,” Mr Snowdon said.
