Navy scans horizon for inter-service rivalry
Australian Rules footballers from the Navys mens and womens national teams will
aim to maintain their hold on Australian Services Australian Football Association
(ASAFA) Championship, when their rivalry with Army and Air Force resumes at
Whitten Oval in Melbourne from 1418 April 2010.
The ASAFA National Championship is the major event for Navy, Army and Air
Force footballers. It provides an opportunity for players to represent their respective
Service and the Australian Defence Force. Spirited and fair competition is the
hallmark of the championship and spectators are more than welcome to witness the
high-quality action.
Matches will be conducted at Whitten Oval, with Navy out to defend both the Jimmy
Smail Cup in the mens action and the Commodore Geoff Ledger Cup for the
womens national title.
A championship dinner and awards ceremony will be held following the matches on
18 April, where the respective mens and womens All-Stars teams will also be
named.
Each of the Inter-Service teams is in excellent shape, with Air Force putting Army
and Navy players on notice with a strong performance to win the annual Kapooka 12s
used as a lead-up selection event for the National Championships.
An added incentive for the men this year is the annual Services Challenge against the
Australian Combined Emergency Services (ACES) team, which will be a curtain-
raiser to the Port Adelaide v St Kilda AFL match at Adelaide Oval on the Anzac Day
weekend.
A representative match for the ADF womens side will be confirmed at a later date.
The draw is:
Game 1: 14 April Whitten Oval
1300: Women - Army v RAAF
1500: Men - Army v RAAF
Game 2: 16 April Whitten Oval
1200: Women - Navy v First game loser
1415: Men - Navy v First game loser
