MINISTER FOR DEFENCE ADDRESSES INDONESIA’S

NATIONAL RESILIENCE INSTITUTE

The Minister for Defence, the Hon. Joel Fitzgibbon MP, today delivered an

address to the Indonesian Government’s pre-eminent strategic studies

institute, the National Resilience Institute, known as Lemhannas.

In his speech the Minister noted the long history of bilateral defence

cooperation between Indonesia and Australia, dating back to Australia’s

deployment of peacekeepers in the 1940s in support of Indonesian

independence.

“As Minister for Defence, I look forward to progress in key areas of

cooperation between Australia and Indonesia including maritime security,

peacekeeping, disaster relief and reform and governance,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

The Minister emphasised the importance of cooperation on governance and

renewal between Australia and Indonesia.

“Defence forces with strong governance functions and accountability are

better equipped to deal with security challenges and support their own

government institutions, as well as better able to contribute effectively to

coalitions in addressing regional security issues.”
