INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON MILITARY OPERATIONS RESEARCH

FOR SYDNEY

The Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support, the Hon. Dr Mike Kelly AM MP,

today officially opened the Ninth Asia-Pacific Military Operations Research

Symposium (AMORS IX), at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney.

The three-day international symposium is hosted by the Defence Science and

Technology Organisation (DSTO).

This year’s symposium theme - “Operations Analysis and Operations Research

Supporting Current Operations” - focuses on the growing importance of military

analysis in both current operations and other areas of the defence capability life

cycle.

“Military operations analysis plays an important role in all areas of the defence

capability life cycle, from identifying our capability needs to the specification of

operational or systems requirements and evaluating our current in-service systems,

Dr Kelly said. “

“Since 2005, DSTO has deployed volunteer analysts into operational areas in some

15 ADF and Coalition operations, including in Iraq, Afghanistan, East Timor and the

Solomon Islands.”

“It is reassuring to see that operations analysis is being pursued with such

enthusiasm and we are using the skills developed here to achieve better operational

outcomes and to help shape future capability decisions,” Dr Kelly said.

DSTO was supporting operations analysis with a unique joint Pre-deployment

Operations Analysis Course. The annual four-week course was proving so

successful it was now attracting international interest with several coalition partners

sending participants.

Held every two years with the host status rotated amongst participating nations, the

symposium has drawn some 25 international visitors from 12 countries including

Canada, India, Indonesia, Japan, (Republic of) Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand,

Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and the United States of America.
