FUNDING SUPPORT FOR WEIPA DEFENCE FAMILIES

Defence families in Weipa will benefit from an $8250 boost under the Australian

Government’s Defence Family Support Funding Program.

The seeding grant has been provided to the Defence Community and Recreation

Centre, located at 51st Battalion’s B Company in Weipa, to assist with the

purchase and installation of soft-fall tiles for the playground at the depot.

Local Member, Jim Turnour said the Defence Community and Recreation Centre

provides recreational, educational and support activities for the families of

Australian Defence Force members in the Weipa area.

“With this additional $8250 grant, Defence children in Weipa will be provided with

a safer environment in which to play,” said Mr Turnour.

“During regular social functions at the depot, the playground is a source of

entertainment for the children and allows for parents to socialise while the

children are occupied.

“The Minister and I have both visited the 51st Battalion in Weipa and have seen

first hand their high standard of work. I am pleased the Australian Government

has recognised their efforts and provided support to the members’ families,

particularly their children,” Mr Turnour said.

Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, The Hon Warren Snowdon MP, said

ADF families face a lot of challenges as a result of the military lifestyle.

“Families are required to be mobile, relocating sometimes as often as every two

years, to areas where they may have no established family or social support

networks,” Mr Snowdon said.

“The Defence Family Support Funding Program is one of a number of programs

provided to help these families connect with the local community.”
