DOORSTOP REGARDING INCIDENT IN AFGHANISTAN
What:
Doorstop regarding the operational incident in Afghanistan, which
resulted in the deaths of Afghan civilians.
Who:
Lieutenant General Mark Evans, Chief of Joint Operations.
When:
10.15am, Friday, 13 February 2009.
Where:
Outside Building R1, Russell Offices, Canberra.
Background:
In the early hours of yesterday morning, soldiers of the Special Operations Task
Group (SOTG) were conducting an operation in Oruzgan Province.
During the conduct of this operation there was an exchange of fire between Australian
forces and Taliban insurgents.
Tragically, a number of people have been killed and wounded during this incident.
Current reporting indicates that those killed include a suspected insurgent and, sadly,
local nationals, including five children killed, and two children and two adults injured.
