DEFENCE JOBS CARNIVAL GROWS IN PRESTIGE

The Minister for Defence Science and Personnel the Hon Warren Snowdon MP has

praised the Australian Football League Northern Territory (AFL NT) Defence Jobs

Carnival underway in Darwin today.

“This three day round robin series is a great opportunity for talented AFL players from

across the Northern Territory to showcase their abilities, and will also, for the first time,

feature players from Timor Leste,” Mr Snowdon said.

“The DFR Timor All-Stars will be competing as an exhibition team with local Timorese

footballers, 4 who have travelled from Timor Leste to Darwin to play and the rest of the

players drawn from the Australian Defence Force.”

They join an impressive 20 or so teams competing in three divisions:

Navy Division – this division will be made up of NTFL Reserve teams, TEAFA and

Representative or Invitational teams.

Norforce Community Division – teams from communities across the Top End will be

able to display their abilities. The top placed Indigenous team in this division will go

on to participate in the annual ‘Dreamtime at the G’ event in Melbourne.

RAAF Women’s Division – this division will be made up of NTFL Women’s teams and

any Representative teams.

“The AFLNT Defence Jobs Carnival helps raise the profile of the Australian Defence

Force amongst young people in the Northern Territory and assist with our recruiting

efforts,” said Mr Snowdon.

“It illustrates the many shared values between the AFL and the ADF by involving

dedicated men and women who are fit  can work as a team and who display leadership

skills.

“In addition, the highest placed Indigenous Community side will have the opportunity to

play in a curtain-raiser match at the MCG, as part of the AFL's 2008 Indigenous Round.

“I know Santa Teresa, winners of the 2007 Army Community Division, will be competing

hard for the right to play again in Melbourne, and I wish everyone the very best in this

competition.
