WHAT:

The Australian Defence Force Academy 2009 Chief of Defence Force Parade.

WHY:

To officially welcome 332 Navy midshipmen and Army and Air Force officer

cadets to the Academy and to the Australian Defence Force.

WHERE: Australian Defence Force Academy, off Northcott Drive, Campbell, ACT.

WHEN:

The Parade will commence at 9:30am on Saturday 28 February 2009.

WHO:

The Hon. Dr Mike Kelly, AM, MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support,

representing the Minister for Defence, will be received by the Parade.  The Chief

of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, will review the Parade.

BACKGROUND:

The Australian Defence Force Academy invites family, friends and members of the

community to join in welcoming 332 young men and women to the Australian Defence Force

at the annual Chief of Defence Force Parade.

The Chief of Defence Force Parade marks the completion of five weeks of intensive military

training for these new midshipmen and officer cadets, who will march with the entire ADFA

cadet body for the first time on Saturday.

They have learned about leadership, physical training, adventure training, drill and

ceremonial skills, equity and diversity, military law, weapons handling and field craft. They

are developing the professional abilities and the qualities of character and leadership

appropriate to future Officers, and future leaders, of the Navy, Army and Air Force.

Over the next three to four years they will continue to develop these skills while gaining an

excellent university education through the University of New South Wales at the Australian

Defence Force Academy. This training will equip these midshipmen and officer cadets to

meet the many interesting and varied challenges of their military careers.

Three RAAF BAe Hawk 127 lead-in jet fighters will conduct a flypast over the Academy

Parade Ground during the Parade. This flypast will take place between 10:15am and 10:30am.

MEDIA NOTE:

Media are requested to arrive at the main Australian Defence Force Academy roundabout at

9:15am for a pre-event briefing and escort to the Media Section adjacent to the Parade

Ground. The Parade will conclude at approximately 11:00am.

Please contact Defence Media to attend at an alternate time or to arrange interviews with

midshipmen and officer cadets.  In the event of wet weather, a ceremony will be held in

Adams Hall, at the Australian Defence Force Academy.
