006/2009
BEGINNING THE OFFICER JOURNEY
Across Australia today more than 250 men and women were appointed to the
Navy, Army and Air Force as Midshipman and Officer Cadets, with further
appointment ceremonies to be conducted on 22 and 27 January 2009.
The Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon. Warren Snowdon
MP, was honoured to attend the NSW appointment ceremony.
The young men and women I have witnessed being appointed here today
have been through a highly competitive application process, and have proven
that they have potential to become future leaders in the Australian Defence
Force (ADF), Mr Snowdon said.
It was fantastic to be with these new Defence members and their families,
during this defining moment in their lives.
The ceremony comprised 68 high school graduates from across NSW, who
were appointed as Midshipman and Officer Cadets in the Australian Defence
Force. They will now travel to the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA)
in Canberra and undertake a three-year military and leadership training
program while studying undergraduate degrees in arts, business, science,
engineering or technology through the University of New South Wales.
These Year 12 graduates are about to embark on exciting and rewarding
careers, where over the next three to four years they will undertake a
challenging program of military training, leadership development and
academic studies, Mr Snowdon said.
They will be paid to study, have their tuition fees and textbooks paid for by
the Australian Defence Force, enjoy a fantastic lifestyle, and graduate with a
guaranteed job in the Navy, Army or Air Force.
I offer my congratulations and best wishes to everyone here and to all the
other ADFA appointees across Australia today and during the next week, Mr
Snowdon said.
