BASE SECURITY REVIEW
Following the arrests on August 4 of individuals allegedly planning an attack on the
Holsworthy Army base, Defence conducted a prompt and rigorous review of security
at its bases and key locations.
Media reports today purporting to contain details of the review had a number of
inaccuracies
For example, the review certainly did not refer to the ethnic background of taxi
drivers, or of any drivers, as a security issue.
The review, carried out at the Governments direction, made a series of
recommendations to enhance security that responds to the changing nature of
potential threats.
The Government accepted the reviews findings and has directed Defence to
implement enhanced security measures. These enhancements are under way.
In relation to the Holsworthy matter, the review found the Defence Security Alert
System worked effectively but the review concluded that improvements can always
be made to base security arrangements.
For obvious reasons, the details of the security measures identified and
the recommendations made cannot be discussed.
The media should treat responsibly any information relating to the Defence Base
Security Improvement Program.
Defence will not be making any further public comment on the aspects of this review,
at this time.
