Additions to Roll of Honour
The names of five Australian soldiers were added to the Australian War Memorial's Roll of Honour at a private family ceremony today, before the National Remembrance Day Ceremony.
Lieutenant Michael Kenneth Housdan Fussell
4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (Commando), Afghanistan
Lieutenant Fussell was killed in combat in Oruzgan Province on 27 November 2008
Private Gregory Michael Sher
1st Commando Regiment, Afghanistan
Private Sher was killed in a rocket attack in Oruzgan Province on 4 January 2009
Corporal Mathew Ricky Andrew Hopkins
7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment
Corporal Hopkins died of wounds in Oruzgan Province on 16 March 2009
Sergeant Brett Ian Till
Incident Response Regiment
Sergeant Till was killed by an explosion during a route clearance task in Southern Afghanistan on 19 March 2009
Private Benjamin James Ranaudo
1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment
Private Ranaudo was killed by an explosion while on operations in Oruzgan Province on 18 July 2009
The ceremony included a wreathlaying at the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier by each family; the unveiling of names on the Roll of Honour by the Chairman of the Council of the Australian War Memorial, General Peter Cosgrove AC MC (Ret'd); and the placing of poppies alongside the names by family members.
The Memorial thanks the media for respecting the privacy of families during this private ceremony.
The Roll of Honour lists the names of over 102,000 Australian servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their nation.
