Three arrested in connection with fraudulent tax
returns
Three men were today arrested by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in
Sydney, following an Australian Taxation Office (ATO) investigation into
fraudulently lodged tax returns.
A
30-year-old Indian man and a 27-year-old Bangladeshi man appeared in
Sydney Central Local Court this afternoon and were bailed to appear in
Downing Centre Local Court on 15 December 2009.
The second 27-year-old Bangladeshi man was granted police bail this evening
and will appear in Downing Centre local court on 20 November 2009.
It will be alleged in court that the men claimed tax returns from the ATO, on
behalf of several identities, using several bank accounts and then accessed the
funds.
AFP officers, accompanied by ATO investigators, executed three search
warrants in Rockdale this morning, where the men were arrested.
The 30-year-old was charged with dealing with proceeds of crime, worth
$50,000 or more, contrary to section 400.5 of the Criminal Code 1995.
The two 27-year-old men were charged with dealing with proceeds of crime,
worth $10,000 or more, contrary to section 400.6 of the Criminal Code 1995.
The maximum penalty for these offences is 15 years imprisonment.
